Science Teaching Pedagogy

We will be here for you every step of the way. Our education consultant will work with your secondary science teachers to assist them with understanding the pedagogy for the many visions and goals embedded within the Ohio Learning Standards for Science.

Specifically in Ohio Science Learning Standards

Cognitive Demands

5E Learning Model of Instruction

Cognitive Demands

We offer personalized guidance and support to assist teachers with understanding and implementing instruction that guides students through the four cognitive demands as set forth by the Ohio Learning Standards for Science.

Nature of Science

5E Learning Model of Instruction

Cognitive Demands

Our experienced consultants will aid teachers in making sense of the four categories of scientific processes for their particular grade level found in The Nature of Science in the Ohio Learning Standards for Science.

5E Learning Model of Instruction

Allow our consultants to train your teachers in how to employ the 5E Model of Instruction in conjunction with Phenomena-Based Learning for each of their intentionally planned units of instruction .

Learning Domains

  • Know, use and interpret scientific explanations of the  natural world
  • Generate and evaluate scientific evidence and explanations, distinguishing science from pseudoscience
  • Understand the nature and development of scientific knowledge
  • Participate productively in scientific practices and  discourse.

Ohio’s Student-Centered Goals for Science Education

  1. Experience excitement, interest and motivation to learn about phenomena in the natural and physical world.
  2. Come to generate, understand, remember and use concepts, explanations, arguments, models and facts related to science.
  3. Manipulate, test, explore, predict, question, observe and make sense of the natural and physical world.
  4. Reflect on science as a way of knowing; on processes, concepts and institutions of science; and on their own process of learning about phenomena.
  5. Participate in scientific activities and learning practices with others, using scientific language and tools.
  6. Think about themselves as science learners and develop an identity as someone who knows about, uses and sometimes contributes to science.

(Duschl et. al., 2007; Bell et. al. 2009)

Our Approach

Fundamental Learning: middle school years; students learn the science concepts and master the content statements

Application Learning: 9th and 10th grades; students apply the science concepts to the content being taught

Concept Transfer Learning: 11th and 12th grades; students use several concepts to find "solutions" to real-world problems

While in each unit, stretch students through the Cognitive Demands, employ the Nature of Science, implement literacy/vocabulary strategies, incorporate Active Learning strategies; all within the 5E/Phenomena-Based Learning Models
